Maplewood Drive in Rancho Madrone on October 24, 2026, showing severe alligator cracking and crumbling asphalt with loose gravel.

The surface of a strange planet? No. Just the street in front of my house. Maplewood Drive, Rancho Madrone — October 24, 2026.

Rancho Madrone, Sonoma County

Four streets need to be rebuilt, not patched.

The roads on Oakwood Drive, Brookview Drive, Maplewood Drive, and Glenwood Drive in Rancho Madrone are in such bad need of repair it has become a major issue for this part of the county. Old timers here say the road has been repaved once since 1955. The conditions have deteriorated to such a degree that it's a real public safety hazard on many levels, and accessibility for handicapped or wheelchair access is impossible on the street.

What the county's own record says

  • 1The county's own rating for these roads is "Very Poor."
  • 2By the county's own standard, Very Poor means rehabilitation, not preservation.
  • 3The request is still filed in the county system as a "Pothole" (Request #7181 / #26-003080). It is past its October 15 resolution date.
  • 4The county canceled the October 30 site meeting, saying "no work is currently scheduled."

Our one ask

Rehabilitate Oakwood, Brookview, Maplewood, and Glenwood Drive.

Note for site owner: Whether each street segment is county-maintained or private is not yet verified. Any future vote date is not yet verified. Do not add either until confirmed.

Who's in charge

The short answer

The five-member Board of Supervisors votes the county's Pavement Preservation Program (PPP) list by majority vote. Sonoma Public Infrastructure (SPI) recommends the list; it does not approve it. One supervisor alone cannot put a road on the list, and changing the list or its funding takes a Board majority at a public Board meeting.

The Board of Supervisors

  • District 1, Rebecca Hermosillo (2026 Board Chair)

Term runs to January 2029. Next election: the 2028 cycle. Not on the November 3, 2026 ballot.

  • District 2, David Rabbitt

Term ends January 4, 2027. On the November 3, 2026 ballot.

  • District 3, Chris Coursey (2026 Vice Chair)

Term runs to January 2029. Next election: the 2028 cycle. Not on the November 3, 2026 ballot.

  • District 4, James Gore

Term ends January 4, 2027. On the November 3, 2026 ballot.

  • District 5, Lynda Hopkins

Term runs to January 2029. Next election: the 2028 cycle. Not on the November 3, 2026 ballot.

Board contact: (707) 565-2241, bos@sonomacounty.gov, 575 Administration Dr, Room 100A, Santa Rosa, CA 95403. Board meetings are Tuesdays.

The November 3, 2026 election

Only Districts 2 and 4 are on the ballot. Factual ballot listing only, no endorsement, no campaign material:

  • District 2: Joanna Paun, Sylvia Lemus
  • District 4: Tom Schwedhelm, Melanie Bagby

Polls are open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Registration deadline October 19, 2026. Vote by mail opens October 5, 2026.

No county road-funding measure is on the November 3, 2026 ballot. Road money that year still comes through the annual budget.

How road money works

The PPP list in Legistar File 2025-0533 covers fiscal years 2025-26 and 2026-27: $22,755,725 for FY 2025-26 and $23,004,111 for FY 2026-27. Sources: the county General Fund, the state SB1 gas-tax allocation, the Measure L transient-occupancy-tax share, refuse franchise fees, and aggregate road mitigation fees.

SPI builds the recommended list from pavement data and field observation under the county's Road Evaluation Framework, which does not name specific roads.

Beyond the Board

  • County Executive David Guhin

Appointed by the Board. He appoints and supervises the SPI director and prepares the county budget the road money sits in. He does not vote the PPP list. Contact: (707) 565-2431, 575 Administration Dr, Suite 104A, Santa Rosa, CA 95403.

  • SPI Director Johannes J. Hoevertsz

Leads SPI and is the named staff on the PPP Board item. SPI contact: (707) 565-2550, spi@sonomacounty.gov, 400 Aviation Blvd, Suite 100, Santa Rosa, CA 95403. Road maintenance: (707) 565-5100.

  • SPI Deputy Director, Engineering and Maintenance, Vanessa Garrett

Her official portfolio is delivering road infrastructure projects and advancing operations and maintenance of the county road system.

  • SPI Deputy Director, Transportation and Operations, Monique Chapman

Her official portfolio is integrated waste, small water systems, Sonoma County Transit, and fleet operations. No road portfolio is stated for this role.

  • Open question

The county has not publicly assigned this specific matter to either deputy by name in the sources found. Both portfolios are listed above exactly as published.

  • SPI Road Operations Division Manager Rob Houweling

Oversees maintenance of 1,328 miles of county roads. This is an operational maintenance role, not a vote on the PPP list.

A separate body, not to be confused with the county list

The Sonoma County Transportation Authority (SCTA) is a separate 12-member regional board (nine city members and three supervisors: Hopkins, Coursey as Vice Chair, and Rabbitt). It decides regional Go Sonoma transportation funding. It does not vote the county PPP list, and its advisory committees advise SCTA only.

SCTA contact: 411 King St, Santa Rosa, CA 95404, (707) 565-5373, info@scta.ca.gov.

2027 outlook

No supervisor seat is up in 2027. Districts 2 and 4 are filled by the November 2026 election; Districts 1, 3, and 5 run to January 2029. 2027 Sonoma ballot items are not yet published by the Registrar of Voters.
